About Event
The Great Smoky Mountains Hot Air Balloon Festival is a one-of-a-kind evening event in Townsend, Tennessee, celebrating color, community, and creativity. Visitors can enjoy an array of activities, from craft demonstrations and local food trucks to a beer garden and live entertainment. The highlight of the night is the tethered hot air balloon glow—weather permitting—where vibrant balloons light up the valley in a dazzling display.
The festival raises funds to benefit the Townsend Volunteer Fire Department and Townsend Elementary School, making it a celebration with a cause. General admission is affordable, and kids under 12 get in free, with prepaid parking available for convenience. Guests can also upgrade to the VIP Lift Off experience, which includes access to a private tent, a tethered balloon ride, catered food and drinks, signature cocktails, live music, and festival swag.
Held at the Townsend Visitor Center, the event offers something for all ages—whether you come for the food, the music, or the unforgettable sight of hot air balloons lighting up the Great Smoky Mountain night sky.
